Can ChatGPT Cite Your Site?
AI answers only cite pages they can read. We check whether yours can be read, hand you the files that fix what is blocking it, and show you what actually gets cited — measured, not estimated.

What is AI Citation Tools?
A measured record of who AI actually cites
AI Citation Tools is a free web tool for one question: when AI search answers a query, does it name your page — and if not, which of the two failures is it? Paste a URL and you get our recorded numbers if we measured it. Paste your page source and eight checks run in your browser, with the fix for each one.
AI search engines prefer pages they can fetch, parse and quote. AI Citation Tools reports those basics — but it does not submit your site to ChatGPT, and it does not guarantee a citation. Use the free checks first, fix what is blocked or unreadable, and only then chase the citation itself.
Three guides, each built on the same dataset:
What you find out in one pass
Six fields per page — each one recorded, no composite score
Whether AI crawlers are blocked
robots.txt rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. 7 of the 48 blocked at least one — 5 of those blocked a retrieval crawler.
Whether your content survives without JavaScript
Whether the text survives when nothing renders. 1 of the 48 had no text at all.
Whether a machine can tell what your page is about
JSON-LD presence, read from the page itself. 19 of the 48 had none.
llms.txt
Whether it exists and whether it is real. 4 of the 48 returned a 200 with an SPA fallback page, not a file.
Whether AI actually cited you
How many of our runs actually cited the page. 22 of the 48 were cited at least once.
Where you ranked when AI went looking
Where the page ranked when it entered the pool. 5 of the 10 #1 pages were never cited.
Want the gap closed, not just measured?
The free check tells you what a machine cannot lift off your page. The paid work is that same list written out for your site — the exact files, and where each one goes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT crawl my site?
That is the first of two questions, and the easier one. ChatGPT's retrieval crawler (OAI-SearchBot) and training crawler (GPTBot) follow your robots.txt. In the 48 pages we measured, 5 blocked retrieval crawlers and 5 we could not determine. Being allowed is necessary but it does not get you cited: only 22 of the 48 pages were cited at least once.
Why isn't my site cited by AI?
There are two different failures. Either AI never got the page (crawler blocked, or the text only exists after JavaScript runs), or it got the page and chose a different source. In our 5 queries across 48 sources, the second case was the common one: 5 of the 10 pages that ranked number 1 in search got zero citations across 6 runs.
What does AI Citation Tools measure?
Five things per page: whether AI crawlers are allowed, whether the text survives without JavaScript, whether JSON-LD is present, whether llms.txt really exists, and how many of our runs cited the page. We do not produce a composite 0–100 score, because a single number would hide the difference between “could not reach you” and “reached you and picked someone else”.
Is the check really free?
The readability check and the fix generator run entirely in your browser, with no signup and nothing uploaded, and they are free. Citation measurement is different: every query costs model calls, so that is what the paid work covers. Automated checks do not guarantee rankings or AI citations.
How is this different from an SEO tool?
SEO tools measure where you rank. Ranking decides whether you enter the candidate pool; it does not decide who gets cited. In our data, 41% of the sources that were actually cited ranked outside the top 3 search results. That gap is what we measure.
